This came to light last week when Nqobizitha Sibanda appeared before the Western Commonage Magistrate Temba Chimiso facing charges of contravening Section 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act.
He was charged with physical abuse and was remanded out of custody to Wednesday for continuation of trial.
Sibanda pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court he was trying to keep his wife quiet by beating her up.
“I admit I punched her several times on the face because she was talking too much,” he said. That infuriated me and I failed to control my temper.”
According to the State’s outline, Sibanda assaulted his wife Sasizani Nhliziyo after she snatched his phone while he was chatting on WhatsApp with a suspected lover.
The husband, realising his wife was going to find out more secrets if she kept on reading the messages, jumped on her and battered her all over the face with fists and she sustained serious injuries on the mouth.
In her statement, Nhliziyo told the court that she returned home from work and found her husband glued to the phone failing to give her attention.

“I came around 7pm and he was sitting on a couch glued to his WhatsApp and he failed to respond to my greetings,” she said.
“I sat next to him and he shifted the screen of his phone away from me. I asked myself what he was hiding.
“After a few minutes, I became jealous and snatched his phone to read his messages. That is when I found out he was chatting to a girl I do not know.”
In tears, the woman said she expected her husband to apologise for what he had done, but instead she received blows on her face, accompanied by insults.
