Hazeleanor is set to undertake an environmental impact assessment (EIA) public consultation to ascertain the impact of the exploration project.

“The organisation has decided to undertake an EIA in order to identify the impacts associated with the exploration project,” read part of their announcement on Friday.

“The EIA will generally cover the potential environmental impacts, positive and negative (consisting of the natural, social and economic impacts) on the environment arising from the exploration project.

“It is also paramount to state that the process will engage a wide range of stakeholders to solicit for socioeconomic and ecological views, concerns and perceived impacts as a result of the exploration project.”

In their statement, Hazeleanor said should the project yield positive results, they would partner foreign investors for the extraction of the mineral.

“The organisation currently has five special blocks, each covering an area of about 150 hectares,” the company said.

“The exploration process is anticipated to have considerable environmental and social impacts which will have to be mitigated if negative and enhanced when found to be positive. As such there is need to mitigate against these impacts,” the company said.

The prospectors have contracted Bumira Environmental Consultants to conduct the EIA as well as gather views from stakeholders affected by and those interested in the project.

“The purpose of the stakeholder consultation is to ascertain on the immediate, short to long term direct and indirect impacts of the project on the surrounding communities and other stakeholders,” the statement added.

“The mitigation measures that may be implemented on the impacts will also be formulated through this process.”
