There has been a rumour that the school closing dates have been broughtforward to November 28, instead of December 4, to make way for the Region 5 Youth Games, which will be hosted by Bulawayo.

In an interview yesterday, Bulawayo provincial education officer Dan Moyo said that he was not aware of such developments. “I am not aware that the Youth Games will affect the school closing dates,” he said.

According to the Zimbabwe school calendar, primary and secondary schools are set to close their end of third term on December 4.

Bulawayo is set to host 11 countries from the region with participants taking part in athletics, netball, swimming, basketball, football, tennis, boxing and judo from December 5 to 14.

A number of facilities which include the National University of Science and Technology, Hillside Teachers’ College, Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo City Pool, Barbourfields Stadium, Luveve Stadium and White City Stadium will be the venues for the games.

A total of 120 Zimbabwean athletes are already in camp for the regional championships.
