The Ncube-led MDC and the MDC-Renewal are pushing ahead with unification plans after signing an agreement to engage in unity talks about a month ago.

Bulawayo MDC-Renewal interim spokesperson Edwin Ndlovu said his formation was holding workshops with its members to inform them of the benefits of the proposed unity pact.

“We will be briefing our general members about the pending unification with comrades in the MDC led by Ncube, the NCA and other progressive forces,” he said in a telephone interview.

“We are also telling them that at the end of this month there will be a signing ceremony of the unification and again we are saying this pending organisation is not about positions.

“We are telling them of the benefits of a united opposition movement. We are saying it’s not about positions, but it’s about uniting the people of Zimbabwe to remove Zanu PF.

Ndlovu added: “The meetings are being held countrywide. The y are not touching on who will occupy what position. We are not talking about positions, but about forming a united front against Zanu PF.”

In October, the two parties signed an engagement pact for possible unification.

They resolved to engage on the basis of their common history, bond and origins of the original MDC that was formed in 1999.

Analysts have said a united front is necessary to dislodge President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF’s party.
