Metron Nkiwane (24) appeared before magistrate Sharon Rosemani facing charges of child abuse as she left her minor children alone in a locked room for four days.

The children aged nine and six were left without anything to eat.

“I had no other choice, but to leave my children locked up,” she said in her defence.

“My husband left me, so l go to the bar to find ways of getting money for me to be able to support my children as l have no other means of income.”

Prosecutor Takunda Ndovorwi told court that on November 13, the accused left her two children inside a bedroom and went to an unknown destination for four days.

The children were left without food and keys to the door.

The children then managed to get out of the room through a broken window. It was their aunt, Khalistar Ndiweni, who found them seated outside the house and took them to her home where she gave them food to eat as the children were hungry. Ndiweni then reported the matter to the police, leading to Nkiwane’s arrest.

“We are waiting for the probation officer to advise us on what is going to happen with children under these circumstances before we sentence you,” Rosemani said.

Nkiwane was remanded in custody for sentencing today.
