NBSZ Matabeleland region public relations officer Sifundo Ngwenya told Southern Eye that they would launch pre and post donation campaigns in Bulawayo, Plumtree and Gwanda to encourage more people to donate blood.

“The campaigns will also target the youths who were writing their examinations and could not get time to come and donate blood,” he said.blood-power

“Schoolchildren that are healthy and above 16 years should come and donate blood so as to save lives.”

Ngwenya encouraged adults and youths to come in their numbers to donate blood at NBSZ centres across the country.

“Zimbabweans should celebrate the holiday season by donating to the sole blood products supplier for all the country’s hospitals to enable them to meet the demand for their three principal blood products,” he said.

“There are banners across the country so people will know where to donate blood.”

Ngwenya said NBSZ would be in partnership with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and the Vehicle Inspection Department in a campaign aimed at reducing road accidents.

“We will assist at roadblocks so that road accidents are reduced,” he said.

“We also encourage retailers to close their shops on time to avoid people travelling at night. We urge members of the public to drive safely and avoid road carnage, especially as we approach the festive season.”

Festive seasons in Zimbabwe have been characterised by a high number of road accidents resulting in loss of lives.

According to TSCZ statistics, 822 accidents were recorded during last year’s festive season.
