Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) secretary general Ringisai Mapondera confirmed the development to Southern Eye Sport yesterday.

“We have eight players who will leave the country on December 3 to take part in the Sub-Zonal Region 5 Continental beach Volleyball qualifiers to be held in December in Namibia,” he said.

They will compete with players from Malawi, Namibia and Angola. We hope for a good performance. We will then be advised where and when the zonal competition will be done.”

The team comprises Nyashadzashe Takawira, Brighton Ngunzi, Rufaro Douglas Choto and Kudzai Nigel Sibangani in the men’s category.

The women’s section players are Viola Muchaona, Charity Madlangombe, Kundai Fungai Chawasema and Vuyiswa Dlomo.

Mapondera said the players would gain experience from participating in the tournament. VolleyXBallXonXNet

He said it was important for the players to get exposed in the sport which was introduced in the country a few years back.

“We are strongly moving forward with beach volleyball,” he said.

“We see that we have more chances of success.

“We are also trying to encourage players from Bulawayo to take up beach volleyball because in this team only two are coming from the city.”

The Zimbabwe beach volleyball junior teams have shown a lot of potential although they have been hard hit by lack of finances.

ZVA failed to raise funds to send four Under-23 players to the World Championships in Poland despite the two teams making it to the next stage in June while a month later, the Under-21 beach volleyball team failed to travel to Cyprus for the World Championships.

In April, the Zimbabwe beach volleyball team failed to travel to Ghana for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers also due to lack of resources.
