Chief executive officer of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Trust, Jabulani Hadebe, confirmed yesterday that the 21km race had been cancelled.

“I have been on leave and when I came back to the office on Friday I found that people had slept on it. The race is not going to take place. No one was doing anything about it,” Hadebe said.

The Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) confirmed Hadebe and apologised for the inconvenience.

“The race has been cancelled. A number of people had been making enquiries about it, but there were no athletes that had registered for the race.

“We had a number of people including Samukeliso Moyo who is in South Africa who wanted to compete. We apologise it is beyond our control as the athletics board,” BAB secretary Dailes Bingadadi said.

The race was part of commemorations for the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo who died on July 1 1999.

It was postponed three times before and was scheduled to be held today as the country commemorates Unity Day.

The race was first postponed after it clashed with the Econet Victoria Falls marathon before being cancelled again on November 1 as most athletes had registered for another event on November 9.

Last year the marathon started from Nkomo Museum in Matsheumhlophe which is the late vice-president’s residency, to his house in Pelandaba.
