Newly-promoted Zifa Southern Region Division One side Magwegwe Pirates are appealing for sponsorship to compete next year.

Magwegwe Pirates were promoted in Southern Region Division One together with BCC Golden Stars from the Zifa Bulawayo Province Division Two and they will be joined by Makomo and Amagagasi from Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two.

The club’s patron Josh Makava yesterday told Southern Eye Sport that they were in dire straits and seeking funds to compete in Division One.

“Magwegwe has survived from funding by Sindiso Ncube, a transport operator and the community. We wanted to sell the franchise and return to Division Two, but the elders in the community have refused and said we should go and play in Division One.

But times have been hard and we are appealing for sponsorship to participate in Division One. The challenge as we foresee in Division One would be travelling, camping allowances and some allowances for the boys,” Makava said.

Teams in Division One in Bulawayo travel to Hwange (Technosphere, Hwange Juniors, ZPC Hwange and Mpumalanga, Makomo), Victoria Falls (Trumus and Amagagasi) and Ntabazinduna (Ntabazinduna Prison).

Plumtree Chiefs have been mooting the idea of playing at the border town. Makava said Warriors legend Benjani Mwaruwari this year sponsored the club with a kit and balls and told them to approach him if they were elevated into Division One.

Magwegwe Pirates are planning to reintroduce juniors from Under-8.The Under-8 will be playing in the Bulawayo Children’s Soccer League which will be introduced next year.

Due to financial constraints, this year saw former giants Zimbabwe Saints being expelled from Division One League after failing to fulfil fixtures and failing to pay Zifa affiliation fees.

Another team that was kicked out was Kabwe Warriors while Portland Cement also struggled.

The league ended the season with 14 teams and plans are underway to increase the number of teams to 18 next year.
