A close relative, who spoke to Southern Eye on condition of anonymity, said Mwanza’s death had left them shocked as he had not shown any signs of distress that could lead him to suicide.

“As a family we are failing to come to terms with Davy’s death,” the relative said.

“We are still in shock because we did not see it coming as he had not displayed any signs of distress or complained about anything that would lead to his death.

“Initially, he came to Bulawayo for the holiday from Gweru and he was very jovial. He spent most of the time with his friends and no one could ever suspect he was suicidal.”

Another relative, Lethiwe Moyo, one of the first people to see Mwanza hanging from the tree, said she saw him while she was on her way to work.

“On my way to work around 6am, I noticed that there was someone hanging from the tree and for a moment I ran away,” she said.

“After identifying the T-shirt that Mwanza was wearing, I moved closer because I remembered seeing someone wearing the T-shirt.

“I got the shock of my life when I realised it was Davy.

“I ran back home and told our neighbours what I had seen and everyone rushed to the scene.”

Moyo said they found alcohol and stools at the scene, while maize stalks had been uprooted.

Mwanza, who is believed to be a worker at a university, is said to have spent the whole afternoon drinking beer with friends on Saturday and was last seen by his sister at 9pm.

The deceased’s mother who could not hold back her tears, said she was not in a position to comment as she did not know what could have led to her son’s decision to commit suicide.

“I am not in a position to say anything to you right now because I still do not know what could have driven my son into doing such a thing,” the distressed mother said.

“He looked fine to me, so I don’t know.”

When Southern Eye arrived at the scene, the area was deserted and the deceased’s body had been taken away by the police, who are said to have taken three hours to collect the body as they had no transport.

Efforts to get confirmation from the police yesterday were fruitless.
