Axed Generations actors threaten SABC

The SABC is not bothered by threats made by the 16 fired Generations cast members who took the national broadcaster to court ordering them to stop broadcasting the reworked Generations The Legacy by today.

JOHANNESBURG — The SABC is not bothered by threats made by the 16 fired Generations cast members who took the national broadcaster to court ordering them to stop broadcasting the reworked Generations The Legacy by today.

In December the cast, who called themselves the Generations Actors Guild, delivered a legal letter demanding the “new” Generations be taken off air not later than January 10, failing which they would approach the court to order its removal.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said they had no intention of canning the show.

“We know nothing about the letter. It is a free country so if they want to go to court, they can do that. We have no plans of not airing Generations. These actors were not employed by us, they were employed by whoever fired them, so this is actually an issue between them.”

The decision to challenge the airing of the show comes after the fired actors’ representative identified key “contractual and constitutional breaches” in MMSV Productions and the SABC’s handling of the dispute.

Former SABC chief advocate Dali Mpofu is in the corner of the fired actors advising them the matter involved contractual and constitutional questions and not labour rights alone.

A lawyer representing the actors, Bulelani Mzamo, said: “The decision by MMSV and the SABC to create a new show while the case was as yet unresolved represents a breach of the contractual and fundamental constitutional rights of the actors and they both did so knowing there was a pending dispute and hence it was at their own risk.”
