THE Midlands State University (MSU) last Friday turned away scores of students on school block release sessions from classes, after they failed to pay fees for this semester.

Students were asked to pay between tuition fees ranging between $300 and $500 before they could resume lectures, but most of them who failed to raise the money were turned away from classes.
A lecturer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for professional reasons, told the Southern Eye that the whole of his class was shown the exit door for failing to pay the fees. Students on block release sessions pay between $300 and $500 as tuition fees while the total fees range between $500 and $800.
“All my students in the visiting block had to be turned away after they failed to raise the fees,” the lecturer, from the faculty of social sciences, said.
MSU registrar, Erasmus Mupfiga was not available for comment on Friday.
Last year MSU announced that students who had not registered over non-payment of fees would be barred from writing examinations despite the government’s position that students on cadetship programme should be allowed access to lectures and examinations.
Higher Education, Science and Technology Development deputy minister, Godfrey Gandawa last year told Southern Eye that the government instructed all State universities to allow students under the cadetship programme access to lectures and results despite non-payment of fees.

“Turning away students under the cadetship programme is contrary to government policy,” he said then.
“We have since come in and given instructions to institutions to respect the instruction because it is government policy.
