ZIMBABWE National Army middle-distance athlete Leonard Koki emerged winner of the Bulawayo Athletics Board Cross-country Championships at Mpopoma Park on Sunday completing the race in 41mins 43,34secs in the senior men’s category.

The season opener which attracted a strong field of athletes from Bulawayo saw Bright Siwela of Sportech Club take second position in 42mins 36,01secs while Thando Maphosa was third in 43mins 14,16secs.
Blessed Ruguchu of the Isosli Club in the Under-20 men came first in a time of 27mins 51,76secs with Sparrows’ Bismark Ndlovu a minute later 28mins 55,73secs and in third position Hlalani Ngwenya, also of Sparrows Club, with a time of 29mins 15,69secs.
Twins Sandra and Cynthia Taderera took first and second respectively in the Under-20 women’s category in 26mins 02,12secs and 26mins 18,68secs while in third was Mbonqane Secondary School’s Gugulethu Maphosa who completed the middle distance event in 32mins 04,71secs.
The Under-16 boys category was won by Pride Ncube of the Mbonqane Club who completed the course in 21mins 58,62secs followed by Takudzwa Chigwida of Northlea High School Athletics Club with 23mins 30,93secs and third position was taken by independent athlete Obey Makomo in 25mins 45,67secs.
The Under-16 girls were led by Patience Gurure of the Sparrows Club who finished in 16mins 37,54secs with Yvonne Mutare of the Isosli Club coming second in in 17mins 26,84secs and Memory Sibanda of the Isosli Club coming third in 20mins 03,64secs.
