THE harsh economic environment affecting the business community in Zimbabwe has had a knock-on effect on charity organisations that rely on donations and Masvingo has not been spared, as most traditional donors deserted the 2014 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

Masvingo mayor Hubert Fidze revealed at a second handover ceremony of goods donated yesterday that they had extended their begging bowl to several companies who traditionally assisted them, but only a few responded.

“This time around, some of the benefactors did not assist us as usual,” he lamented.

“But we had reached out to everyone, including our traditional sponsors and new ones, but the response was lukewarm.”

Fidze said for the 2013 Christmas Cheer Fund, they received goods worth $10 000, but this time around they received 30% less.

“In 2013, the response was overwhelming and we got goods worth around $10 000 and we assisted around 45 families, some orphanages and institutions,” he said. “But in 2014, we got far less than that.

“The economic outlook has also had an effect.

“We, however, appreciate the help. We also understand how business is like, since as council, we are also facing challenges.”

One of the beneficiaries, Emily Manatse, a widowed senior citizen aged 74, said the donation of foodstuffs, clothing and shoes will go a long way in alleviating her plight.

“We appreciate the little given to us,” she said gratefully.

“It is the thought that counts.  “We thank the business community for that.

“Some of our relatives’ hearts will not skip a beat over us, but when someone who is not even related to you spares a thought for you, then you should thank the Lord.”

The institutions that benefited include Alpha Cottages Orphanage, Mucheke Old People’s Home, Masvingo General Hospital as well as several widows and child-headed families.
