A Zimbabwean man based in South Africa, popularly known as injiva, who tried to lure his 14-year-old cousin into bed using a dollar, yesterday appeared in court for fondling the minor.

Albert Ncube Own Correspondent Gift Dube (22) of Gungwe village under Chief Mathe pleaded guilty to indecent assault charges when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire.

He was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.

He told the court that he was “playing” with his Form 2 cousin after she held his neck.

Dube further denied trying to lure the cousin using a dollar.

However, it is the girl’s testimony that some time in December 2014 Dube called her and offered her R100 and asked to have sexual intercourse with her, but she spurned the overtures.

Prosecutor Getrude Zvidzai added that on an unknown date but in December 2014, Dube again called his cousin into her, bedroom and asked to have sexual intercourse with her and she refused.

He then started fondling her breasts.

“On January 22 this year, the accused person went into the complainants bedroom offered her $1 so that he could have sexual intercourse with her but she refused,” Zvidzai told the court.

The matter came to light when the girl’s mother got a tip-off that Dube was abusing her daughter.

The girl was taken to Gwanda hospital for medical examination and tests proved she had not been raped.

Zvidzai urged the court to pass a deterrent sentence on Dube that will send a message to the community that men who still habour cultural beliefs, of sleeping with their cousins, will not be tolerated.

Dube told the court that he works in South Africa and earns R1 600 per month.
