A 34-YEAR-OLD man who used a gun to rob people of their cars, cash, laptops and cellphones in the Midlands province, was yesterday jailed to an effective 30 years in prison after being convicted on eight counts of robbery and one under the Firearms Act.

Mtulisi Matamba robbed Albert Mavhunduse of his revolver after threatening him and went on to use the gun to rob several people of their valuables, including cellphones, laptops and cash, among other belongings.

Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire sentenced Matamba to 40 years on the nine counts before suspending 10 years for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The State’s case was that on October 21 2013 at Petrol Trade, Kwekwe, Matamba forcibly took a revolver belonging to Mavhunduse after threatening him.

On May 1 2014 at the 160km peg along the Harare-Mvuma Road, he robbed Jonas Dzingo of his worksuit, black trousers, $47 cash and a cellphone after threatening to shoot him with a gun.

On May 15 2014 at Gakaka business centre, Ruchanyu, Shurugwi, Matamba robbed Koekemoer Gwenyaya of his Nissan Cube, torch and cellphone.

On other occasions between May 15 2014 and June 11 the same year, Matamba robbed several people of their cellphones and laptops including $5 200 cash belonging to Estery Hapazari.

Matamba was nabbed by police after a tip-off from the public.
