Most DJs do not have basic knowledge on investments, bookkeeping and associated business activities and Kirah Music wants to add the business side of entertainment to Bulawayo DJs.

Speaking to the Southern Eye Lifestyle, Kirah Music marketing manager Climate Munikwa said apart from recording music for artistes, they had now introduced a section for DJs in an endeavour to nurture the “biz” part of the entertainment industry after realising that in Bulawayo there was the “show” part while the “biz” side was lacking.

“The evidence that the business is not there is that some DJs perform for peanuts. You find someone performing for transport money. This is because these DJs are not serious about their careers and deejaying is like a hobby to them. Promoters will never take them seriously,” Munikwa said.

He said Kirah Music wants to set a trend by starting lessons with three DJs, two female and one male.

In addition, Munikwa said professionalism starts with the smallest tools such as a DJ having an invoice book, quotation book and a receipt book.

“We have decided to rope in two female DJs, DJ Ndoe and Miss Pam. This is also moving toward opening a school of professional deejaying, which will be run under the mentorship of DJ Ryan Synth, who is known for “multi-mixing” techniques on a radio show called Club Life on ZiFM hosted by Gibson Ncube.

“Synth will specialise in jazz and DJ Ndoe will specialise in house and Afro-pop and we are yet to find a genré for Miss Pam. At the moment she will be assisting DJ Ndoe,” Munikwa added.

He said they were trying to teach the DJs to be masters of their own destiny.

“As much as we want them to be professional, we also want them to build a good character both off and on the stage.

“Our vision is to create a sustainable industry through active partnership of all stakeholders and professional conduct by artistes themselves.

“At the moment the DJs will be rehearsing in our studio before they go out to perform. Kirah Music will be branding these DJs to be exemplary to other DJs nationwide,” he added.
