The province has already started preparations with the naming of some venues that are going to be used during the games and renovations are underway on other venues.

In an interview with our sister paper NewsDay Sport, the Sports and Recreation Commission Manicaland provincial co-ordinator Shupikai Berejena said he was confident his province would host an event with a difference.

“We have already started preparations and we have come up with names of venues that we think we are going to use. We want to start renovations immediately. Already we have started work at Dangare Primary School which will be used for netball and Mutare Boys’ High School where there are basketball courts,” he said.

“Our budget was put at $850 000 so that we could successfully host the games. This is an important tournament and we expect to attract over 500 delegates. We are trying to put mechanisms so that we won’t disappoint our visitors,” he added.

But Manicaland Provincil Affairs minister Mandi Chimene bemoaned the state of Sakubva Stadium, which is earmarked to be the hub for the games.

“Everything at Sakubva Stadium needs to be renovated. We will use the venue for the official opening and closing ceremony, so we don’t want to be left with an egg on our faces,” she said.

The last edition of the Youth Games was hosted by Masvingo Province with Harare dominating the games after scooping 40 medals.

Masvingo came second on the medals table with 35 medals while Manicaland came sixth after racking up eight medals.
