BBA held a tournament at the Manor Hotel on Saturday where about 20 pugilists traded leather to be part of the team that will represent the province.

BBA vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said the tournament would help select the boxers for the Triangle tournament.

“The tournament will be useful in recognising some boxers who will join the already selected team to represent Bulawayo in Triangle at the selection for All-Africa Games on March 28. If finances allow us then it means the best boxers are going to join the selected team,” he said.

The tournament saw young boxers who include Andile Ncube who was part of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games team taking part in the tournament.

Ncube won on points against Lobengula’s Assurance Moyo in the light Welterweight division while Arnold Masiyambumbi who has represented the province at the National Youth Games lost to Lancelot Moyo on points in the same weight category.

Ndlovu, however, said they were impressed by Zibusiso Nyoni and Hubert Chitera;’s light fliyweight bout saying the young fighters were impressive.

“The fight between the two was indeed the best of them all considering they are juniors. We hope they will represent Bulawayo at the Youth games later this year. There is a lot of talent in Bulawayo and I believe from this province many are going to be selected for the national team,” Ndlovu said.

In other fights Nketa Club’s Methembe Dube beat Bill Mugarisanwa through a technical knockout in the pin-weight category.

Rhalton Ngulube of Nketa sent Wisdom Nyarota from the same stable crashing in the light flyweight division.

In the flyweight category Hubert Chitera of Lobengula club defeated Bongani Ndlovu of Nketa club through points tally.

Bantamweight boxer Sibusisiwe Khumalo of Lobengula who fought in the only women’s bill of the night beat Musawenkosi Ncube of Nketa through a technical knockout while in the super bantamweight division Nkulumane’s Everson Musambidzi defeated Future Nkomo of Lobengula through points.

Mthabisi Ndlovu of HQ One Brigade club knocked-out Nicky Musonza from Nkulumane in the catchweight category.

Ndlovu applauded the Bulawayo community for their participation and support.

“We are grateful for the participation of the Bulawayo community who came out to support our boxers, hopefully the sport will be a success this year,” he said.
