A brainchild of arguably the best marimba band in the country, Rainbow Blaze, the project was initiated in 2000.

The six-member Rainbow Blaze group has been hard at work with schools teaching learners marimba.

One of the organisers of the event Nkululeko Nkala told Woza Weekend that the concert was designed to build friendships among school children.

“The concert is designed to foster friendships among schoolchildren. The same schools will compete in the second term for prize money and a trophy.

“Marimba is unique as we often see schoolchildren participate in dance, drama and singing competitions, but for a change we are bringing marimba,”

We did this deliberately so that the competitions become friendly. The event is free and everyone is invited.

Twenty-seven schools will participate in this year’s concert featuring both primary and secondary schools, with some coming from as far afield as Hwange, Kezi and Gwanda.

Schools held workshops building up to the event with Rainbow Blaze and will present a six-minute piece at the concert.

Participating schools are Magwegwe High, Mahlabezulu Primary, Pumula High, Maphisa Primary, Founders High, King George, Sizane High, Losikeyi Primary, Dominican Convent, Marula Primary, Amhlophe High, Mgoqo Primary, Petra High, Sigombe Primary, Mzilikazi High, St Joseph Mission Primary (Kezi), Mandwandwe High, St Thomas Primary, Lobengula High, Masiyephambili Primary, Msiteli High, Main Camp Primary (Hwange), Maranatha High, Our Lady of Assumption (Church), Christian Brothers College and Gwanda High.
