WHILE social networks were abuzz about the red carpet being rolled out at the Union Buildings for the president of Zimbabwe today‚ some media outlets focused on the ageing leader’s new hairdo and earrings.
A photo taken at his arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base yesterday – appearing to show Robert Mugabe with a slightly windswept‚ shoulder-length hairdo and wearing dangle earrings prompted London’s Daily Mail to run a headline “I said I need to find a new HEIR!” – alluding to reports that he is grooming his daughter to Bona to succeed him.
The picture is likely to be gain as much Internet traction as a photo of him taken in February showing him trip on the red carpet on his return to Zimbabwe after being elected as the head of the African Union.
That photo became the basis of countless memes which are said to have embarrassed Mugabe and lead to the sacking of members of his security detail.
Newzimbabwe.com reported last week that recent pictures showed that Mugabe’s bodyguards appeared to be more attentive to the 91-year-old to thwart a repeat of the infamous tumble. Mugabe’s arrival marks his first state visit to South Africa in 21 years.
This morning‚ he was greeted with a 21-gun salute in Pretoria.
