The workers wanted to block management and councillors from attending the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair that opens in Bulawayo next week.

Workers who have been holding daily protests during their tea break accuse councillors and management of spending too much on travel.

The workers, who received their December 2014 salaries last Friday, are still to get back pay for April to July 2014 as well as their bonuses.

Four of the cars impounded included a Toyota Quantum bus mostly used by councillors for tours. Workers’ committee organiser Simbarashe Leboho said it was unfair for management to travel when workers were owed salaries.

“The cars are being kept safely at Gweru Central Police Station so that they are not abused by unscrupulous officials who have a penchant for travelling when workers are wallowing in poverty,” Leboho said.

Both town clerk Daniel Matawu and mayor Hamutendi Kombayi were said to be out of office yesterday.

Councillors reportedly gobble a staggering $244 581 in travel and subsistence allowances between September 2013 and February this year, a figure that angered workers.
