Masiyambumbi passed away yesterday morning at United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) after battling a kidney ailment.

The former boxer has been involved in the sport for more than three decades as a pugilist, referee, administrator and coach.

Bulawayo Boxing Association vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said they had lost a great administrator.

“We worked well with him when he was assistant coach to Dave Hammond after his retirement from being a boxer sometime in 1983.

He became national coach after Moses Makhula went to the United Kingdom before he became the national association’s technical director,” he said.

Ndlovu said Masiyambumbi was there at their last tournament at Manor Hotel two weeks ago but he was still unwell.

“It is surely a great loss,” said Ndlovu.

Masiyambumbi’s eldest son Stephen said his father died at 5:30am yesterday while admitted in hospital.

“His kidneys were not functioning well to the extent that he was vomiting blood. He was admitted at UBH and passed away this morning,” he said.

“We have lost a great man who wanted to see the development of boxing in the country and we hope someday his dream will come to fruition,” he added.

Masiyambumbi is survived by his wife and 10 children, five boys and five girls. His five boys Stephen, Arnold, Foster, Brighton and Samson are all boxers.
