The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) reportedly cut off water supplies to Shurugwi council over outstanding payments.

However, the claims could not be confirmed yesterday as Shurugwi Town Council chairperson, Tsungai Makore and Zinwa officials could not be reached for comment.

Angry residents said the shortage of running water in residential areas was making life difficult for them.

Paul Zhou, a Makusha resident, said they were forced to walk long distances to other suburbs to fetch water from boreholes.

“The local authority every month expects us to pay for water we are not even using and some of us are forced to walk to where there are boreholes,” Zhou said.

“The council should address this situation before our children suffer from water borne diseases.”

Ellen Moyo added: “The situation is getting worse. Our taps have been dry for almost two weeks.

“This has made our life very difficult and also exposed us to diseases.”

The local authority last year reportedly received $1, 2 million from the United Nations Children’s Fund for water and reticulation infrastructure upgrade.

The UN agency reportedly funded the replacement of ageing water pipes at the municipality to improve the water situation in the town.

The council at the time also indicated that part of the funds will be used for the computerisation of the billing system to address the billing problems.
