The incident occurred in the presence of police officers stationed at the court.

The State alleges that Sikhanyisiwe Nyathi consumed the poisonous substance after being called back into the court for a ruling.

Nyathi, who was previously sentenced for cases of assault and indecent conduct on several occasions, started shouting: “Let me die, I am tired of being sentenced by an MDC magistrate.”

Police officers then rushed her to hospital.

Prior to the incident, Nyathi had pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries on Sibongile Ncube (40) accusing her of snatching her sister’s boyfriend.

The court heard that sometime in April at Kudu Klub, Nyathi hit Ncube with an empty beer bottle when she saw her talking to her sister’s husband Philimon Phiri.

The two started fighting and Nyathi allegedly bit Ncube’s left arm and right forefinger, leading to her arrest.
