ZCSA chairperson Ngqabutho Mabhena told Southern Eye that the meeting was meant to assess challenges faced during the application process.

South Africa’s Home Affairs has reportedly processed more than 100 000 Zimbabwe Special Dispensation permits since October last year.

The permits were given to Zimbabweans who hold the Dispensation for Zimbabweans Projectpermit and was valid until December 31 2017.

It allows them to remain in South Africa and apply for a visa relevant to the terms of their stay in the country.

“The meeting is set to do an analysis of the entire project given the challenges that applicants faced when applying and the number of people whose application were rejected and the reasons for rejections,” Mabhena said.

The actual number of Zimbabweans in South Africa was not known although there were reports that the number could be between one to three million economic refugees.

Illegal immigrants across the Limpopo took centre stage in April in the aftermath of the xenophobic attacks that rocked South Africa.

Zimbabwe repatriated 1 000 people who were affected by the xenophobic attacks.

President Robert Mugabe has refused to take responsibility of the influx of Zimbabweans in South Africa, saying most people were misled into believing that the neighbouring country was a “heaven”.
