Speaking at the handover of 400 chicks, chicken feed and foodstuff on Monday, Proweb president Sibusiso Bango said one of the main objectives of her organisation was to give back to the community.
“Our country’s wealth is agro-based and we would want to advise students that a career in agriculture is the way to go,” Bango said.
“This year Emthunzini Wethemba was chosen after they asked for help in securing chicks and feed to enable them to teach children a livelihood activity and generate income and food themselves.”
Bango said the funds for the chicken project were raised through Africa Day charity run/walk which was held in Harare, which involved over 200 participants.
Emthunzini Wethemba Children’s Home accommodates 60 children at the moment — 26 girls and 34 boys.
“We want to believe that the donation will go a long way in alleviating the problems of the children at this home. It is our hope that this is only the beginning of a long-lasting relationship,” Bango said.

Proweb has in the past helped the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims, youths at Luveve Training Centre and Bumhudzo Old People’s Home. Charles Dube, one of the Emthunzini Wethemba board members, said the centre was facing challenges in terms of managing bills for the children and the staff.
“We have quite a number of challenges and this new project will benefit the children both in skills management and their wellbeing at this home, “Dube said.
