The incident reportedly happened on Monday at 3pm.

The man has been identified as Shiri Dzaoma, a father of five.

As of yesterday afternoon around 5pm, the mine workers were still trying to remove his body from the shaft to no avail, as they were reportedly not using equipment suitable for the job.

A relative, who declined to be named, revealed that Dzaoma was working as a miner at an indigenous mine, Jerere Mine.

The mine is believed to be 80 meters deep.

“The family is saddened by what happened because we don’t even know whether he is still alive or not. Other miners have been trying to rescue him since yesterday to no avail,” the family member said.

The family member blamed the owner of the mine for failing to provide enough resources for the safety of workers.

“We therefore ask the government to investigate whether those indigenous mines do have enough resources to protect workers or not.

This is because most of them do not have enough equipment. If the government fails to do something, then we are doomed as a country.”

Police were not immediately available for comment by the time of going to print.
