In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said the partnership will comprise two models, the build-own-transfer model and a model where infrastructure development companies would construct schools and hand over to the ministry for use.

“The government of the Republic of Zimbabwe has approved the project of constructing school infrastructure through joint venture partnerships.

“The ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has a deficit of 2 056 schools countrywide, 1 252 of them being primary schools and 804 secondary schools,” part of the statement reads.

Children in rural areas are walking on average 10km to 20km to the nearest schools but the government introduced a policy of 5km distances for primary schools and at least 10km for secondary schools.

Primary and Secondary Education minister Lazarus Dokora recently admitted that government had not adequately invested in schools infrastructure over the years and there was need for urgent action.
