A BULAWAYO magistrate Gladmore Mushove yesterday ruled that a Bulawayo Polytechnic College accountant accused of stealing $57 000 had a case to answer.

Mushove said the State had proved that Mujira Chivandi (38) was linked to the offence.

Chivandi through her lawyer Dumisani Dube had denied the theft charges and applied for discharge at the close of the State case.

Prosecutor Jeremiah Mutsindikwa told the court that Chivandi had failed to timeously advise her superiors when the money disappeared from her custody.

“Accused was custodian of the money and could not account for it,” Mushove ruled.

“Accused has many questions to answer which can only happen during her defence case.

“Her application for discharge is hereby dismissed and she is hereby placed on her defence.”

Allegations against Chivandi are that between June 2013 and May 2014 she received various amounts of money amounting to $57 607 from other accounting assistants at the college.

She allegedly diverted the money to her own use and when she was asked to account for it, she failed. A report made to the police led to her arrest.

The matter was remanded to August 13 for trial.
