About 43 surgeries have been performed in Gwanda and 50 were done in Maphisa Word of Life International Ministries founder Goodwill Shana said the programme was targeting the less privileged.

“Our vision as Word of Life is to affect the community for Christ and I think that when you give people sight you are affecting the way they live, you are empowering them, their independence and their freedom,” Shana said.

“Many of these patients had been disempowered as they depended on other people,” he said.

Council for the Blind director Aplos Nyathi yesterday hailed the programme.

“Council for the Blind is heavily involved in the prevention of blindness, restoration of sight and improving the quality of life for many whose sight cannot be restored,” Nyathi said.

The religious group is involved in the rehabilitation of a clinic in Potbury, about 5km from Mbalabala.
