INTWASA preparations continue to gather momentum as the fifth edition of the annual Plan High Schools Drama Competition is headed for the finals after some gruelling preliminaries and semi-finals that saw 62 schools being trimmed to 11.

BY LUYANDUHLOBO MAKWATI The remaining schools will battle it out at the final competition during the festival on September 25 at Bulawayo Theatre. Winners will be awarded with team and individual prizes.

About 62 schools participated in the competition, with more than a 1 000 students taking part in the creative process and thousands non-drama students getting to watch the 62 created plays on disability.

In the finals, Bulawayo is represented by King George V1, Msiteli High, Njube High, Eveline High, Gifford Boys High and Nketa High. Matabeleland North is represented by Tsholotsho High, Dinyane High and St James High. Kwekwe is represented by Silobela High and Sidakeni High.

“All the 11 schools will be visited and helped by experts in an effort to improve on the quality of the presentations during the finals as their works are different,” said festival director Raisedon Baya.

“Drama is actually an interesting tool to teach children and young people about disability. It teaches them empathy, not pity.”

He said the Plan High Schools Drama Competition was a platform for young people to articulate development issues.

This year’s theme, Disability is not Inability, has been one of the most challenging and yet interesting themes of the competition.

The drama competition is organised by Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo and supported by Plan Zimbabwe.
