Eliot Jaya (23) of Lot 160 Harben Park, Mount Pleasant Road in Gweru was not asked to plead to charges of possession of a firearm when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Charity Maphosa.

He was remanded in custody to August 26 for trial.

Jaya was arrested last Friday after police got wind that he was responsible for a case of armed robbery and carjacking, which he allegedly committed in Northend suburb in Bulawayo.

The robbery and carjacking case was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) vehicle theft squad under Bulawayo CID record number 153/08/15.

When the police interviewed Jaya, he was said to have disclosed that the firearm, which he was in possession of, had been kept at house number S20 in Mzilikazi, Bulawayo.

He then led the police to the recovery of the gun, which was found in the sitting room behind a sofa concealed by a curtain. The recovered firearm was identified as a B.S.A shot gun 16 Bore calibre, serial number 2764.

It was said to be registered in the name of the late David Chisuka Kambanje of Lot 160 Harben Park Mount Pleasant Road in Gweru.
