SOUTHERN African Development Community (Sadc) education ministries have been urged to incorporate psycho-social support in teacher’s training due to the psychological challenges affecting a teacher’s performance in class.

This was said yesterday by a member of the Sadc secretariat, Lomthandazo Mavimbela while addressing a psycho-social support forum for Sadc countries in Victoria Falls.
She said psycho-social support was pivotal for effective learning at schools.
“Teachers in the region need psycho-social support so as to boost their performance.
Counselling is very necessary and we cannot assume that they have no psychological issues. So it’s important for education ministries to incorporate that during teacher training,” Mavimbela said.
“Teachers don’t need to shout at learners all the time. Once equipped with such vital skills, learning will be smooth.” A youthful participant from Zambia said that some teachers had a tendency of venting out their frustrations on learners.
He said teachers who received psycho-social support training would be able to control their emotions.
