THE opposition MDC Renewal Team says it is planning to launch wildcat demonstrations after its congress next week to force President Robert Mugabe’s regime to address the country’s deteriorating economic situation.

The party’s Bulawayo provincial spokesperson, Fortune Mlalazi, said the mobilisation exercise will start after the party’s congress scheduled for Harare between September 9 and 11.
“The only exit point from the problems facing Zimbabweans is for our party to provide the leadership. The party is ready to provide the leadership in uniting Zimbabweans to confront the regime,” he said.
“There will be serious mass mobilisation after the congress so as to confront challenges that the people are facing. We cannot be patient anymore and Mugabe and Zanu PF must be grateful for our patience and resilience, but they should know that we have been pushed to the limit, pushed to breaking point. It is time to reject anything that is against us.”’
Mlalazi said they were prepared for a violent response from the State, but that would not break their resolve.
“It is going to be difficult, as we are likely to face serious resistance from the regime, our people will be arrested, so we should brace ourselves, it is now or never.”

Government has in the past ruthlessly crushed political demonstrations, with organisers either detained or severely battered by State security agents.
The MDC Renewal Team was forced to cancel its congress last month after the police withdrew a clearance for the meeting at the last minute.
MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai has in the past also promised protests against the deteriorating economic situation, but is yet to hold a single demonstration.
Zimbabwe’s economy has been contracting since Zanu PF won a huge, but disputable election margin in the 2013 polls.
