TOP Zanu PF officials in Midlands Province on Thursday hijacked a farming conference organised by Women and Land in Zimbabwe for rural women farmers at Gambiza shopping centre in Chiwundura and turned it into a campaign rally.

BY STEPHEN CHADENGA Hundreds of Zanu PF youths and women supporters were bussed from Gweru and Kwekwe and turned the event, where Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa was guest of honour, into a mini-rally.

The ruling party supporters, clad in party regalia, chanted party slogans throughout the meeting before they scrambled for food with the delegates. ZANU-PF-SUPPORTERS-DI Addressing the gathering, Mnangagwa said government was committed to supporting women farming projects to enable them to contribute to “food security” as well as sustaining their livelihoods.

He urged women to value-add their farm produce in order to realise better returns.

The theme for this year’s meeting was “Rural women farmers demanding climate justice, participation in decision-making and recognition of their immense contribution to food security and food sovereignty.”
