The four students — Zanele Mathuthu, Smart Valentine Mudzingwa, Tapiwa Tendai Kuzengurira and Natalie Nonthando Hamandishe — will study mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering degrees at the University of Jinan in China.

SZCC managing director Wang Yong said the scholarship programme was meant to equip locals with “technical skills” in the engineering field so that they could contribute to the country’s industrial development.

Yong said the students were expected to come back and contribute to the country’s economy through “skills transfer and knowledge”.

SZCC sales and marketing manager Ibiam Sengwe said the students would leave for China today.

This is the third group of students to be sent to China to study. In March this year four students from the National University of Science and Technology and University of Zimbabwe were awarded scholarships to study mechanical engineering.

The scholarship programme was initiated in 2003 by China Buildings Materials Corporation president Fang Yongbin.
