Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the accident, but referred questions to national police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi.

“I can confirm that there was an accident in the area, but I cannot shed more light on the issue. Please contact our national office or Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi for more details,” she said.

Efforts to get a comment from Nyathi were fruitless, as his mobile phone went unanswered.

The injured are reportedly in a stable condition at Hwange Colliery Hospital and St Patrick’s Hospital. According to witnesses, the bus was on its way to Victoria Falls, while the haulage truck was travelling towards Bulawayo.

One of the crash survivors, who only identified himself as Ndlovu, said he heard a loud bang and the next thing he remembers was being thrown out of the bus.

“I remember, we were travelling well and all of a sudden I heard a loud bang and the next thing I saw myself outside. Four people died on the spot,” he said.

Another passenger, Mthokozisi Ncube claimed he survived by kicking out the emergency window panel and jumping out of the bus.

“I saw the bus swerving and I realised that there was a huge truck close by. The moment I felt the two vehicles contact each other, I broke the emergency panel and I jumped out of the coach.”
