Speaking during the official opening of the Nkayi Magistrates’ Courts last week, Mathema urged church leaders to take a cue from Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church’s teachings that wealth is a basic requirement for any believers.

Mathema said if by any chance he manages to enter Heaven, he would ask God to punish church leaders who ignored wealth issues during their sermons.

“During his visit in Cuba recently, Pope Francis spoke about poverty affecting African countries and many churches are not preaching about wealth but merely talk about praying,” Mathema said.

“But when I get to heaven I will ask the Father (God) to jail those people because they were given wealth and refused to take it. It is sad that those who are rich use that wealth to abuse the poor while those who are poor submit themselves to be abused by the wealthy.”

Mathema encouraged the rich to use their wealth to develop areas they live in.
