Thalazana Mdluli (49) last Friday pleaded not guilty to fraud when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Merylin Mutshina. She was remanded to November 23 out of custody on free bail.

The court heard that between 2011 and January 27, 2015, Mdluli accepted school fees from parents and receipted the cash in a disused receipt book which she later converted to her own use.

The offence was discovered during an audit of school’s financial records conducted on February 2 to 9 by Primary and Secondary Education Ministry’s internal audit department. The audit team allegedly discovered that Mdluli could not account for $19 435,50 leading to her arrest. Only $4 914 was recovered after she paid a refund.
