A HAILSTORM hit Bulilima East last week, destroying a classroom block at Goba Primary School under Chief Gampu, which was built by villagers two years ago.

The school was built by the local community in 2013 following floods, which left scores of students from the village marooned for four days between Moza Dam and Sinotsi River due to flooding. The new school has an enrolment of 150 pupils, who are now learning in the open following the hailstorm disaster.

Solani Ndlovu, one of the villagers, appealed for donations of materials to help rebuild the damaged structure.

“We can mould bricks to rebuild the only classroom block we had, but the roofing material will be a challenge to buy,” he said.

A teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the situation was now unbearable after the hailstorm destroyed the classroom block.

“It’s really bad. We cannot teach pupils effectively because the facilities have been damaged. As we speak, we are having classes under trees and if it rains again it means we have nowhere to go and we have to halt lessons,” he said.

Ndlovu said construction of the school started after people realised that education had become seasonal for the children, as they were finding it difficult to travel long distances and cross rivers during the rainy season.

The hailstorm also saw seven families losing their homesteads.
