Town secretary, Gilbert Dube said successful tenderers will enter into lease agreements with an option to purchase and eventually acquire title, subject to fulfilment of the terms of the agreement.

“Lupane Town, the provincial capital of Matabeleland North and home to Lupane State University, is poised for massive growth in the next five years,” he said in a notice.

“To this end, the board is inviting tenders from reputable corporate or individual, developers for the acquisition and subsequent development of commercial stands — 25 stands ranging between 150 square metres and 160 square metres and one 900-square metre supermarket site, all located in one of the town’s growth point.”

Lupane was designated as the provincial capital for Matabeleland North in 1999, with government taking the responsibility to develop the centre. Since then, there has been no meaningful development taking place in Lupane due to bureaucracy within the government system.

The university has shifted relocation dates on several occasions.

Funding challenges have been blamed for hampering plans to relocate the university from its rented Bulawayo premises, newly 10 years after it opened its doors for the first intake.

It is reportedly spending more than $100 000 per month on rental.
