THE Local Government and Public Works ministry has given the nod to rural district councils (RDCs) to acquire motorbikes for their councillors in a bid to improve service delivery in their areas of jurisdiction.
A number of RDCs have already acquired motorbikes while some are still waiting for tender processes to be completed.
Local Government and Public Works minister Daniel Garwe presided over the handover of motorbikes in some areas.
The motorbikes are part of the government’s latest call to action report. The rural local authorities that have acquired bikes are Zvishavane, Chikomba, Gwanda, Mberengwa and Mbire, among others.
In an interview, Mberengwa RDC chairperson Garisai Moyo saluted government’s initiative saying it will enhance councillors’ mobility in their respective wards.
“We appreciate this initiative and we secured the motorbikes on our own. We need to up the game and enhance the councillors’ mobility in their respective wards resulting in the effective and efficient co-ordination of developmental projects in all 35 wards,” he said.
Chikomba RDC chairperson Israel Dhikinya said some wards extended beyond 50km hence councillors were finding it difficult to traverse their ares of jurisdiction.
“The motorbikes will enable councillors to efficiently carry out their duties in their respective wards,” he said.

Gwanda ward 3 councillor Linda Moyo said the motorbikes came at the right time, especially, for female leaders.
“We have a lot of responsibilities that come with being a councillor such as data collection, sending out information to villagers, identifying developmental gaps and checking on progress, among others,” she said.
“We had challenges in accessing some areas in our wards which are big and some villagers were complaining that we are not visible but with these motor bikes the situation will improve.”
The RDCs will acquire the motorbikes and councillors are supposed to repay the amounts which are advanced as loans.
