Stakeholders attending a recent conference organised by the Community Water Alliance (CWA) noted the urgent need for climate-resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) solutions in Africa.

They also emphasised the need for citizens' engagement and inclusive strategies to enhance WASH security amid growing vulnerabilities.

Tatenda Mutasa, a senior official in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife underscored the urgent need for districts to mainstream climate change into their operational frameworks.

"Climate change poses significant risks that can disrupt WASH programme activities, affecting communities' access to vital resources," said Mutasa.

His presentation and the discussions around it highlighted how extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, caused by climate change are severely compromising water security and sanitation infrastructures.

Participants shared insights on integrating citizen voices into WASH initiatives, advocating for inclusive approaches that prioritise community engagement and feedback.

The conference was aimed to empower local populations at district level to actively participate in decision-making processes related to water and sanitation, ensuring that their needs and concerns are addressed.

The CWA noted that resilient WASH systems are critical for achieving sustainable development goals across Africa.

"By investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and practices, we can protect our communities from the adverse effects of climate change," said Hardlife Mudzingwa, CWA national coordinator.

Thematic discussions focused on financing systems and investments in WASH initiatives, exploring innovative funding models and strategic partnerships.

Papers highlighted the importance of sustainable financing to enhance resilience, disaster risk reduction, ensuring equitable access to water and sanitation services across vulnerable communities.

"Effective financing models are essential for sustainable WASH initiatives, empowering communities to thrive amidst climate challenges", observed Ruben Akili, Combined Harare Residents Association director.
