ZANU PF central committee member Delani Moyo on Tuesday won the Insiza North primary election, overturning the first round results in which former legislator Andrew Langa’s son Moses had emerged victorious.
Langa’s victory on May 3 was disputed by other contenders who alleged vote-buying, rigging and violence.
Disgruntled party supporters vowed not to vote for Langa in protest, but for an opposition candidate in the upcoming by-election, forcing the Zanu PF leadership to order a rerun.
Moyo had initially conceded defeat and rallied his supporters to back Langa in the by-election.
In the rerun, Moyo garnered 1 905 votes followed by Langa with 1 130, while former Zimbabwe Electoral Commission member Qhubani Moyo received 714 votes.
Indications were that the party leadership from Harare had campaigned for Langa ahead of the disputed May 3 primary election, which other contestants argued swayed the vote in his favour.
The by-elections are set for May 14.
The Insiza North seat fell vacant following the death of Zanu PF legislator Farai Taruvinga.
