Sanyatwe visits hospitalised golfers

Sanyatwe was accompanied by his deputy, Emily Jesaya, as well as Sports and Recreation Commission officials.

SPORT, Recreation, Arts and Culture minister Anselem Sanyatwe yesterday visited the hospitalised golfers who were involved in a road traffic accident on Sunday.

The accident claimed the life of local professional golfer, Morton Kombai, who was based in Zvishavane.

Sanyatwe was accompanied by his deputy, Emily Jesaya, as well as Sports and Recreation Commission officials.

Victor Kachepatsonga from Malawi and Lucky Ayiswere from Ghana are receiving treatment following a road traffic accident that occurred after the conclusion of the Zimbabwe Open Tournament on Sunday.

Local golfers, Biggie, Chibvuri and Tonderai Masunga, who were also in the same car, were discharged from the hospital on Monday.

Chibvuri had a successful operation on his left eye and Masunga needs surgery on his jaw.

Sanyatwe offered words of comfort and encouragement to the athletes as they began their road to recovery.

Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) treasurer Clyton Kazembe paid tribute to individuals and associations that have come in support of the hospitalised golfers.

“We are quite saddened by this tragic event, especially after holding yet another successful Zim Open for 2025. I want to take this opportunity to thank the golfing community at large in Zimbabwe.  The guys received a lot of support morally as well as financially.  All the golf associations, ZGA, Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association, as well as the Ladies Golf Association, came on board to provide their moral as well as financial support and also, the partners in the Zim Open, they came on board, they have provided financial support. The individual golfers have been great in terms of moral support,” Kazembe said.

“It was a sad chapter in the golfing community, but we hope and trust that they will get well soon and be discharged from this facility, hopefully by Saturday, if we are to go by what the caregivers are saying,” he said.

Kazembe said Kombai's body will be transported to Zvishavane today in preparation for burial tomorrow.
