Elizabeth Gumbo (24) pleaded guilty to unlawful possession and use of documents belonging to someone when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takundwa Witness Mtetwa.

The magistrate convicted and sentenced her to six months in jail. Two months of the sentence were suspended for two years on condition of good behaviour.

A further four months were suspended on condition she completes 140 hours of community service at Mlevu Primary School, starting on June 24.

The Court heard that on May 7 last year, Gumbo unlawfully took possession of the birth certificate of complainant Abigail Masuku. She used it to obtain an identity card at the Registrar’s office in Bulawayo.

Gumbo was issued identity card number 79 151045 T 39.

Masuku discovered the criminal act when she went to the Registry offices and was told that someone had unlawfully used her birth certificate to obtain the identify card.

She reported the matter to the police and investigations made led to Gumbo’s arrest.
