The university has built new hostels in an attempt to ease accommodation shortages, which had forced some students to rent rooms in the surrounding high-density suburbs.

Some students were reportedly cohabiting, resulting in high incidents of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. On Tuesday, university authorities confirmed the hostels were ready to accommodate more than 2 000 students.
