GWANDA senator Alma Baloyi-Mkhwebu has appealed to the government to fund informal gold mining activities as they have been a source of income for many people.
CHIEF REPORTER
Baloyi-Mkhwebu of Zanu PF told the Senate while contributing to debate on President Robert Mugabe’s speech that capital injection would help boost panners.
Gwanda is a gold-rich district attracting panners from as far as Manicaland, who have descended on the area in search of quick riches.
“There is a Bill that will soon be coming on mining,” Baloyi-Mkhwebu said.
“I wish that the government could pass a Bill so that they (panners) could be able to work for themselves and get working capital. Madam president, gold has helped a lot in Gwanda, especially during this era of sanctions. It has helped us to survive up to today,” Mkhwebu said.
The senator also appealed for the computerisation of cattle brand marks to reduce cattle rustling.
“I plead that there be brand marks for cattle for each district so as to solve this problem. I plead that each brand be computerised so that people may know which district cattle belong to.
