Silomuzi Mpofu drowned when the slab of the protected well she was standing on caved in while her mother was drawing some water.

According to Matabeleland South police acting spokesperson Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda, the girl’s mother S’khangelinkosi Sibanda (33) and her five-year old son escaped the accident unhurt.

She called for help from other villagers who managed to retrieve the three-year-old girl’s body from the well.

Police attended the scene and a post mortem was waived by Gwanda resident magistrate Arafat Kozanai.

Sibanda advised parents to ensure their children were safe and urged them to be alert whenever they were around such hazardous places with children.
